EDINBURGH EMERGENCY DEMO: DON’T APPEASE PUTIN!
The Ukraine Solidarity Campaign Scotland (USCS) is calling on all supporters of Ukraine to gather outside the Russian Consulate 58 Melville Street, Edinburgh EH3 7HF in Edinburgh at 1pm this Saturday,16th August.
Ukrainians must determine their own future – not Putin and Trump!
The Trump-Putin talks in Alaska on Friday are about what "land swaps" (and millions of people of course) will appease Putin. This is of course on Putin’s agenda. Any agreement on these lines threatens to betray the Ukrainian people’s 11 year heroic fight to defend their country from Russia’s illegal and murderous invasion.
As President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has clearly stated, there can be no peace without Ukraine and no peace against Ukraine. Ukrainian sovereign territory is not the US's or Russia's to bargain over. These talks shouldn't even be taking place without Ukraine, and without a Ukrainian veto over any proposal.
Trump has set the bar low. He hasn't even specified a Russian ceasefire as a precondition for these talks, while Putin brutally seeks to increase the territory under his control, and to terrorise Ukrainian civilians into submission by his nightly missile attacks. Even if there is no agreement, Trump has said he will “walk away”. He will continue to refuse to provide Ukraine with any additional arms with which to defend itself, leaving it vulnerable to Russia’s much larger military machine.
What happens then will be heavily influenced by European states, including the UK. They must fulfil their promises to step up their aid to Ukraine, whatever the US government does. There will be no hiding for them. They will have to stand up and counted as either a supporter of Ukrainian independence, freedom and security, or they will have to accept that Europe’s borders are now open game and can be rewritten by force.
Let’s show our support for a just peace that offers no rewards for people-and-land grabs by aggressive states. It would set a dangerous precedent which threatens to descend into a global free-for-all in which only unconstrained military might is right.
Our support is not altruistic. Ukraine is fighting for all democracies against the autocrats.
Please bring flags, placards. Let's make ourselves seen and heard.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or comments.
